Eleven children died and 19 people – including several minors – were injured in Algeria during a fire declared early Thursday morning at a foundation that addresses medical problems of low-income families, reported the National Directorate of Civil Protection.

The incident occurred at a clinical headquarters of the Childhood Foundation, in the Mohammedia municipality, in Algiers, where fire extinguishing and control efforts are still ongoing, according to the source, which did not specify how many minors were inside the building at the time of the event.
It also did not detail how many children are among the injured, of whom ten suffered severe burns, two were affected by respiratory problems, and seven –“with minor injuries”– were also treated for anxiety attacks.

Additionally, five people with “special needs,” which the source did not explain, were evacuated to a “safe place,” where they are being evaluated to determine what damages they suffered.

Civil Protection, which also did not specify the time the fire was declared nor the causes, explained that the data are “preliminary,” as rescue and extinguishing operations continue.
