Kidnapping news
The tragic story of Iván Díaz, who has been in the loan business for 10 years in Trujillo, begins – according to what he told El Comercio- when he met Juanita Guibert Sandoval back in 2020 through mutual friends. Months later they started a romance, but problems were constant during the three years the relationship lasted.
The continuous fights they had caused him to file 14 complaints against his then partner for domestic violence. The incidents were recorded on the security cameras of his office, as well as threats via text message. He even said that on one occasion she burned a truck and on another threw paint at his vehicle. She also broke a plate on his head during an argument. He claims that the woman demanded money from him, which he initially gave, but later refused, which led to the assaults.
However, according to Iván Díaz’s account, the greatest threat came weeks before his kidnapping, as she warned him that they would accuse him of money laundering and that he would be bedridden. Nevertheless, the day before the abduction they were both at the sauna. What happened on October 23, 2023, was known throughout Peru. A group of three criminals wearing Police vests forcibly entered the entrepreneur’s premises in Trujillo, dragged him out by force, and put him into a vehicle.

He was held captive for 11 days. During those days of confinement, he had no suspicions about who could be behind the kidnapping, as he had not received threats nor had problems with anyone, despite his lending activity. He even said he did not have personal security at that time.
The kidnappers, to intimidate the family into paying the one million dollars they demanded, cut off two fingers of his right hand and the lobes of both ears. The negotiations were tough, as the criminals did not intend to lower the ransom amount, but eventually they gave in and set the amount at 250 thousand dollars. Díaz Garrido says his family had to collect the money he had lent through his business and complete the rest with a contribution from his brother, to whom he is still repaying the loan.

After receiving the money, the criminals released him tied with duct tape in the district of Laredo, but the circumstances that happened after regaining his freedom made him suspect who could be behind his kidnapping. He indicated that one of the criminals revealed to him that it was a woman who provided information for the abduction. Another relevant fact is that Juanita Guibert never called to ask about his health nor visited him during his recovery, despite supposedly still being in a relationship.
His suspicions were confirmed during the authorities’ investigations, as Guibert Sandoval was accused of having provided information to the criminals to carry out the kidnapping. “She set me up,” the man said.
Díaz states that his ex-partner had already planned his kidnapping, as he recalled that she placed a person to work in his office to provide information about his movements. That worker later confessed to him that she had been an infiltrator.
The Trujillo entrepreneur had to undergo reconstructive surgeries due to the mutilations he suffered. Panic took over him after the event and stress situations increased. Amid all this, a stroke affected him in 2024, leaving half of his body paralyzed and walking with difficulty.
The legal battle continues
Iván Díaz told this newspaper that his ex-partner has been missing since she was sentenced to life imprisonment for being the intellectual author of the kidnapping. He fears that the Judiciary will reduce her sentence, as he claimed she has connections with authorities for being related to a high-ranking Aprista leader.
Guibert Sandoval was arrested at the end of September 2025 near the Sánchez Carrión neighborhood in Trujillo, because she had an outstanding warrant for the violence complaints filed by Díaz. The entrepreneur bases his fear on the fact that judicial authorities have shelved the accusations he filed against his ex-partner for the assaults, despite there being video evidence.

He asked the Police to provide protection and to capture the fugitive, as he considers there is a risk that she might attempt against his life. “I am nervous because there could be revenge,” he said.

The other three members of the gang are imprisoned. José Córdova Arteaga and Jackelin Rodríguez Vega were the ones who received the ransom money, while Edward Amaya drove the vehicle in which the criminals fled after the kidnapping. The Police were able to identify the latter because, during the abduction, his wallet – containing personal documents – fell inside the car.
The entrepreneur questioned the work of the Prosecutor’s Office in charge of his case, as he indicated that they showed no interest in trying to identify the three criminals who entered and carried out the kidnapping in his premises, despite him recognizing the criminal Luis Enrique Miguel Blas Rodríguez, known as ‘Negrasho’, as one of the participants in the abduction. This individual is part of the gang ‘Los Pulpos’.
For now, his goal is for a second instance of the Judiciary to confirm the life sentences against the gang members who kidnapped them and to reject their appeals.
