The fig cultivation is part of the productive identity of Chilca, in the province of Cañete. Recognized for the quality of this fruit and for hosting every year the traditional International Fig Festival, the district has consolidated this activity as one of its main sources of local economic development.
In this context, strengthening the capacities of farmers is key to increasing productivity, improving competitiveness, and ensuring the sustainability of this crop. With the purpose of contributing to this goal, Fenix promotes a training and technical assistance project aimed at fig producers in the area.
The project is aimed at members of the Chilca Fig Producers Association and includes a specialized training and technical assistance program that will accompany farmers for ten months, helping to optimize the agronomic management of the crop, strengthen the organization of producers, and promote better results in their harvests.
In its initial stage, the project brought together 100% of the farmers who are members of the association in a first training session. Likewise, the baseline survey was completed and technical visits were made to all beneficiary members, providing support to 26 farmers who together cultivate about 17 hectares and 2,600 fig plants.
“With this project, we seek to strengthen the technical and organizational capacities of fig producers, providing them with tools that allow them to improve the management of their crops, increase their productivity, and generate greater development opportunities for their families. Promoting this type of initiative is part of our commitment to the sustainable development of the communities where we operate,” said Saul Marin, Fenix’s sustainability deputy manager.
The first results reflect a positive response from the participants. Farmers have highlighted the value of the training and technical support, while producers who are not yet part of the association have expressed interest in joining the project, recognizing the contribution it represents for the development of fig cultivation in the district.
Through this type of initiative, Fenix reaffirms its commitment to the sustainable development of the communities in its area of influence, promoting projects that strengthen local capacities, boost productive activities, and contribute to the economic development of the territory.
