August 31, 2026 is NOT a holiday or non-working day in Peru: this is what the regulation says

After thousands of Peruvians enjoyed a holiday at the beginning of the month, taking the opportunity to escape the routine of work or studies, many are now preparing for a new mandatory day off on August 30, according to the Peruvian calendar. This is the feast of Santa Rosa de Lima, in commemoration of the first Saint who from an early age decided to dedicate her life to God and to caring for the sick and children. Thus, amid this civic-religious celebration, the regulation establishes that August 31 will not be considered a non-working day nationwide. However, one region of the country will be able to enjoy this benefit due to the commemoration of an important date. In the following note, we tell you everything you need to know about it.

WHICH REGION HAS A NON-WORKING DAY IN AUGUST 2026?

Amid the celebrations for the Day of Santa Rosa de Lima, this August 30, considered a holiday in the Peruvian calendar, many people will take advantage of the day to visit the sanctuary located in the Historic Center of Lima and leave their letters in the traditional wishing well. Likewise, regarding doubts about whether this Monday, August 31, will be declared an official non-working day, the regulation does not consider this date as a non-working day nationwide. Therefore, workers must fulfill their usual workday.

However, during this month, the citizens of Tacna enjoyed a day off on Friday, August 28, due to the commemoration of the anniversary of the reincorporation of this region to Peru, a date recognized by Law No. 23849. This allowed local workers to suspend their work during that day and later compensate for the hours not worked, which will allow them to enjoy a long holiday for three days, as shared by Infobae.

IS THE HOLIDAY FOR THE DAY OF SANTA ROSA DE LIMA 2026 CHANGED?

The Ministry of Economy and Finance (MEF) announced a measure that seeks to reorganize holidays to move those that fall between Tuesday and Friday to the nearest Monday. Minister Elmer Cuba explained that the proposal aims to reduce interruptions to the workday and ensure greater continuity of productive activities, replacing the previous initiative that contemplated moving them to Fridays.

In this way, he pointed out that moving these official breaks to Mondays would optimize the organization of companies, as well as boost tourism by facilitating the planning of trips and activities. However, Cuba specified that this new measure would come into effect in 2027 and would be incorporated into the holiday calendar for that year, as shared by Andina. “Moving it to the nearest Monday is better. There are business activities that occur on Saturdays […] So you don’t break the production chain,” he said to RPP.
