Callao waited 19 years to experience an afternoon like this again. The last memory of Sport Boys defeating Sporting Cristal was starting to feel too far away, almost becoming a story told from generation to generation. Until Hernán Da Campo appeared in the added time of the first half (45’+1’), unleashed a right-footed shot from outside the box, and caused the Miguel Grau to erupt.

It was not just a 1-0. It was one of those victories that carry a different weight. Because Carlos Desio’s Boys are achieving something that for years seemed difficult: restoring the Callao fan’s hope that their team can look anyone in the eye. And now, after seven rounds of the Clausura Tournament, that hope is starting to have numbers to back it up.

Amid a historic afternoon, there was also a scene that caught attention. Yoshimar Yotún and Christian Cueva, teammates and friends for many years on the Peruvian national team, had a verbal exchange during the match.

It was not a break-up by any means. It was football. Two players who know each other very well defending different jerseys and competing for a ball that, for a few seconds, seemed to be worth more than any friendship.

After the match, Cueva downplayed the scene. “Yoshimar Yotún is a brother that football gave me. It’s part of the adrenaline and spectacle. We both defend the colors we wear,” he explained.

And maybe that is the best way to understand it. For 90 minutes they were rivals. When the match ended, they were friends again as always.

The goal that made the ‘Lion’ cry

Da Campo had scored before. But probably none of his goals carry the meaning of the one he scored against Cristal.

The play started after a ball that ended up at Cueva’s feet. The ‘Aladdin’ rolled the ball back and Da Campo appeared to shoot first-time from outside the box. The ball traveled to an impossible corner for Diego Enríquez and the Miguel Grau became one single shout.

Then came the resistance. Sport Boys had to defend their lead throughout the second half and did so with a commitment that explained the emotion afterward. Among those who felt the victory the most was Carlos Zambrano. The defender couldn’t hold back tears.

“Callao deserved something like this. We were fair winners. It’s impossible not to get excited about a championship,” he declared afterward. Maybe he cried because he understood what it meant. Because it was not just another victory. It was breaking a wait of almost two decades and doing it precisely against one of the greats of Peruvian football.

A Boys that filled the Grau again

The result doesn’t appear out of nowhere either. Sport Boys have been turning the Miguel Grau into a meeting point for Callao for several rounds. People felt represented by their team again and the team started to respond.

Carlos Desio has built an intense, competitive team with players capable of interpreting different moments of the match. Against Cristal, they didn’t need to have the ball for long periods: they needed to know how to suffer. And a few rounds ago, they took a draw from Alianza Lima, the Apertura Tournament champion.

Statistics show a balanced match in possession —58% for Boys and 42% for Cristal— but the pinks achieved something even more important: limiting the opponent’s chances. Sporting Cristal ended without shots on goal, while Boys had two. And when it was time to resist, a defense led by Zambrano and Hansell Riojas appeared.

From hope to possibility

With this win, Sport Boys reached 14 points and settled in third place in the Clausura, just two points behind Universitario and Deportivo Garcilaso. Suddenly, the table starts to make the dream seem less far-fetched.

Boys already have four wins in the tournament. And each victory at the Miguel Grau seems to fuel the next. The fans fill the stadium, the players respond, and the team begins to walk a path that a few months ago seemed reserved for others.

There is still a long way to go. A championship is not won after seven rounds and the schedule will put Boys in front of even greater challenges. But there is something that did change. Callao believed again.

And maybe that’s why Zambrano cried. Because for years the pink fan had to settle for remembering what once was. Today they can start imagining what could be again. After 19 years, Sport Boys beat Cristal again. And this time, in Callao, no one wants to wake up from the dream.
