The date was born in Russia in 2007, the idea of programmer Valentin Balt, who suggested that a date honoring his profession should fall on the 256th day of the year, a notable number because it refers to the number of possible combinations in an eight-bit code, the minimum unit of information in the field.
This fixation with the number causes Programmer’s Day to change date in leap years and, for example, it will be celebrated on September 12, 2028.

Although the idea was born in 2007, it was not implemented until 2009, when President Dmitry Medvedev signed a decree establishing the new holiday, which soon found echoes around the world.
