WHY WILL THERE NO LONGER BE SERVICE ON WEEKENDS, ACCORDING TO RENIEC?

In the context of the organization and execution of electoral processes, such as the Municipal Elections and the Elections of Authorities of Populated Centers corresponding to the year 2026, the National Registry of Identification and Civil Status announced the suspension of public service during weekends in its offices nationwide, due to the budget reduction assigned to the institution. This measure could affect thousands of Peruvians who urgently need to carry out various procedures, either to exercise their right to vote or to access other fundamental rights and services.

According to the head of Reniec, Carmen Velarde, the insufficiency of budgetary resources limits the provision of additional services linked to the electoral processes for this year, such as hiring personnel and acquiring necessary materials for the issuance of the new DNIe. However, the public entity specified that it facilitates virtual procedures through its web platform, including renewal and duplication of the document, updating the electronic DNI, data rectification, and request for certified records, as shared by Andina.

WHY SHOULD THE REPORTED LOST DNI NOT BE USED AFTER CARRYING OUT THE DUPLICATE PROCEDURE?

In the midst of municipal elections, it is essential that citizens keep their identity document updated in order to access various public and private procedures. In this context, the National Registry of Identification and Civil Status asked citizens to remain alert to the loss of the DNI, due to the serious risks this entails, such as identity theft, opening bank accounts, fraudulent debts, among others. Thus, this situation leads the person to take as a first measure to file a complaint at the police station to avoid possible improper acts and start the duplicate procedure.

However, Reniec informed the population that, after carrying out this process (offices or virtual), the previous document is canceled and loses legal validity, even if the holder recovers it later. And according to the public entity, using the DNI declared lost has serious administrative consequences because it no longer appears as valid in institutional records. Finally, it urged users to collect the new electronic DNI issued after the duplicate procedure, as well as to use the document to officially identify themselves in the country, as shared by TV Perú.
