WHY YOU SHOULD NEVER USE AN ELEVATOR DURING AN EARTHQUAKE?
Experts recommend never using the elevator during an earthquake or tremor, as it could detach from its structure and fall from a great height with people inside.

What to do before an earthquake
• Have your emergency backpack ready.
• Identify safe zones at home, work, and on the street.
• Participate in drills.
What to do during an earthquake
• Stay calm.
• Protect yourself under a sturdy table or in the life triangle.
• Stay away from windows and objects that could fall.
What to do after an earthquake
• Assess damage and check for injured people.
• Use text messages to communicate and avoid overloading phone lines.
• Stay away from damaged buildings and follow authorities’ instructions.
How to prepare before an earthquake?
Conduct drills, have your emergency backpack ready, and plan an evacuation route with your family. Prevention saves lives.
What is the difference between earthquake, tremor, seismic event, and seismic movement?
They are synonyms, but in some countries “earthquake” is used for the most destructive seismic events.
How to know if an earthquake is strong?
There are two ways:
– Magnitude, measured on the Richter scale, indicates the energy released.
– Intensity, measured on the Mercalli scale, measures the impact on people and structures.
What should my emergency backpack contain?
It should contain the essentials to survive the first hours after an earthquake:
– Hygiene items
– First aid kit with bandages, alcohol, gauze, pills, among others
– Warm clothing
– Non-perishable food such as tuna, energy bars, chocolates, and nuts, as well as cash
– Radio or flashlight with batteries
– Specific items according to needs, such as products for babies, elderly, or pets
How is a tremor different from an earthquake?
Both are movements of the Earth, but we usually call “earthquake” those with greater magnitude and destructive impact, while “tremor” is used for milder seismic events.
Why are several magnitudes reported for the same earthquake?
Because the first information comes from nearby stations and is adjusted as more data arrives from different sensors. Science continues calculating after the first alert.
How do we know an earthquake will happen?
Earthquakes cannot be predicted, but seismographs and accelerographs detect ground movements in real time to alert us as quickly as possible.

What to do if I am on the street when an earthquake starts?
Find an open place away from poles, trees, or buildings. Beware of electrical wires. If you are driving, stop cautiously in a safe place.
- HOW TO ACT DURING AN EARTHQUAKE?
- • Go to the already established safety zones.
- • Stay away from glass or objects that could fall.
- • If possible, avoid panic and try to stay calm.
- • Do not run in vehicle passage areas.
- • If you are driving, stop your vehicle.
- • If you are in a building, do not use the elevator, always use the stairs.
- • Be attentive to minors, disabled people, and the elderly.
- WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN EARTHQUAKE, TREMOR, SEISMIC EVENT, AND SEISMIC MOVEMENT?
- Actually, the four terms are synonyms, but in Latin America special emphasis has been given to the term earthquake to refer to destructive seismic events or those that have caused casualties.
- WHAT IS AN EARTHQUAKE?
- An earthquake is a sudden rupture of rocks inside the Earth. This sudden release of energy propagates as waves that cause ground movement.
- WHAT IS SEISMIC SILENCE?
- Seismic silence is a prolonged period without significant seismic activity or intensity in a region, which may indicate the accumulation of tectonic stresses and an increased risk of a future earthquake.
- WHAT IS THE PACIFIC RING OF FIRE?
- The Pacific Ring of Fire is a geologically active region surrounding the Pacific Ocean and the continents bordering its waters. It is characterized by a high frequency of earthquakes and volcanic activity. It extends approximately 40,000 kilometers, including subduction zones where tectonic plates collide (such as the Nasca plate), generating frequent volcanoes and earthquakes.
- WHAT TO DO IN CASE OF A TSUNAMI?
- If you receive official tsunami alert or alarm information or see the sea receding, evacuate to higher areas. Move to a flood-free zone and head to the nearest meeting point. If you cannot reach a higher area, go to an upper floor or the roof of a solid building.
- CHECK AND WRITE DOWN EMERGENCY ASSISTANCE NUMBERS.

- • Warm clothing
- • Non-perishable food (canned tuna, cereal bars, chocolates, nuts, etc.) and money
- • Communication items
- • Specific items for babies and infants, feminine use, elderly, and other basic needs.

- WHY IS PERU A HIGHLY SEISMIC COUNTRY?
- Peru is located on the western edge of South America, the region with the highest seismic activity in the world, and therefore it is necessary to understand the probable behavior of this hazard in a given area in order to plan and mitigate the effects that could occur in the future. The way to understand this behavior is through seismic hazard assessment.
- HOW ARE EARTHQUAKE DATA OBTAINED IN PERU?
- CENSIS obtains its data from the National Seismic Network (DS-0017-2018MINAM), made up of a series of velocity, acceleration, and displacement sensors distributed throughout the country.
WHAT IS THE LARGEST MAGNITUDE EARTHQUAKE RECORDED BY INSTRUMENTS IN PERU?
On Thursday, October 3, 1974, an 8.0 magnitude earthquake was recorded in Lima at 9:21 a.m., striking the capital of Peru as well as much of the Peruvian coast to the south. The movement lasted about 90 seconds and resulted in 252 deaths and 3,600 injuries.
Peru is located in a seismic zone and the occurrence of earthquakes is inevitable. A study by the IGP indicates that seismic energy is accumulated in the south of the country, which should encourage participation in drills.
The entity responsible for recording every tremor in the country is the Geophysical Institute of Peru (IGP). It also provides official information every time an earthquake occurs through its social media accounts.

WHY IS PERU A HIGHLY SEISMIC ZONE?
Peru is a highly seismic country because it is located within the Pacific Ring of Fire.
