Chinese military scientists have presented a high-power microwave system capable of reaching 100 gigawatts, enough, in theory, to interfere with or damage satellites located in low Earth orbit, such as those that make up the Starlink network.

The technology was described by researchers from the National University of Defense Technology of China in a study published in the journal High Power Laser and Particle Beams. The document represents an unusual disclosure about the military capabilities developed by Beijing in this field.

The most powerful device combines several synchronized pulse generators to reach 100 gigawatts. According to the researchers, a pulse of just one gigawatt could already cause serious interference or damage to the electronic components of a satellite.

Unlike anti-satellite missiles, this technology would use electromagnetic pulses to affect the equipment without physically destroying the spacecraft. This would avoid the generation of space debris and reduce the cost of a possible attack against large constellations.
The system still needs to improve the precision of its beams, as well as reduce its size and cost before achieving wider deployment. China is also looking to adapt it to mobile or shipborne platforms, although it is unknown how many of these weapons are currently operational.
