All regions of Peru regressed in public education management last year, without exception, according to the Private Competitiveness Council. The headline is alarming, but it measures something different from what we immediately believe: the index does not evaluate learning, it evaluates classrooms, infrastructure, and equipment. There, the diagnosis is unanimous: in the 25 regions, fewer and fewer public schools have all their classrooms in good condition, without distinguishing between the best and worst governed.
In the Traffic Light of this Sunday, July 19, learn about El Comercio’s stance on the following topics. First, it is encouraging to recognize that young people do believe in ethics, as demonstrated by the Private Anti-Corruption Council contest where students used TikTok to denounce acts of corruption. Second, there is evidence of serious state negligence in prevention against El Niño, as the IPE warns of a possible economic downturn for 2027. Finally, the State wastes a great opportunity with assets seized from organized crime, as administrative inefficiency keeps more than 60% of these properties in total abandonment or disuse.
This is the question that we at Conscious Capitalism Peru pose to the young people participating in the Conscious Young Citizens workshop in different regions of the country. And the answers, regardless of the place, are repeated. Young people want to live in a country with security, real access to quality education and health. Where women are not afraid to walk down a dark street or get into a taxi. Where they have economic opportunities and are not discriminated against because of their race or place of origin. They want a country without corruption, hitmen, illegal mining, or drug trafficking. They want to live in democracy, with freedom and dignity.
