Diego Forlán took over as the new Uruguay U-20 coach and interim head coach of the senior national team, but one of his first statements generated special expectations. The former footballer left open the possibility of calling up Luis Suárez again, the all-time top scorer of the ‘Celeste’, despite the forward having been left out of the last World Cup call-up.
Asked about the words Suárez had spoken before the World Cup, when he said he was willing to defend Uruguay again, Forlán was emphatic. “I have enormous affection for Luis. We have a lot of trust. Yes, he is selectable, he is Uruguayan,” said the new coach.
“Having a player like Luis, with experience, who scores goals and keeps proving it every weekend he plays, why not? No one is going to question what Luis is,” Forlán added. With this, he opens the door again for the Inter Miami forward to wear the Uruguayan jersey, something that has not happened since September 2024.

Suárez, 39, had left that possibility open on April 1. “I would never say no to the national team,” the forward said then, although Marcelo Bielsa decided not to include him in the squad that played the 2026 World Cup. The forward had been sidelined after announcing his farewell to the ‘Celeste’ in September 2024.
Suárez’s last match with Uruguay was against Paraguay, in the qualifiers, a game that ended 0-0. After that farewell, the forward was critical of Bielsa and questioned some internal situations that, according to his version, had generated tension within the squad.
Suárez closed his World Cup stage with appearances in South Africa 2010, Brazil 2014, Russia 2018, and Qatar 2022, as well as 16 matches played in World Cups. With 69 goals in 143 matches, he is Uruguay’s all-time top scorer. Will he return to the national team?
