“Lima, you are my fuel”: Ricky Martin ignited Costa 21 on a night of dance, desire, and nostalgia | Chronicle and photos

At 9:15 p.m., when Ricky Martin appeared on the Costa 21 stage, the drizzle was already falling over Lima. No one moved or sought shelter. A simple “Hello, Lima!” and the first chords of “Pégate” were enough for the cold to stop mattering.

The second song was “María” and any attempt to keep composure ended there. The audience sang, danced, and shouted as if the song had just been released. Ricky moved across the stage with the same confidence he had for decades, smiling, provoking, gauging every reaction. And it worked.

Because it only takes Ricky Martin appearing on a stage for something strange to happen with time. One returns to the songs danced to without shame, to the loves believed eternal, and “Vuelve” seemed written exactly for that heart someone had left broken.

That night, Lima also did its part. Thousands of people sang a song about asking someone to come back. Some hugged the person next to them. Others raised their cell phones. And perhaps more than one remembered someone who was not coming back.

‘The King of Latin Pop’ smiled. Danced. Moved his hips as if the decades were just a date on the calendar. And one understood that he hadn’t come only to sing. He had come to remind us of all that.

Costa 21 ceased to be a concert venue and became a gigantic party. Arms up. Phones recording. Shouts. Women dancing among friends. Couples following the rhythm. Choruses competing with the singer’s voice. The rain could fall. The audience still danced.

Ricky moved from one end of the stage to the other with that combination of precision and ease that made dance part of his artistic identity. He didn’t need to ask for company. Lima was already surrendered. He smiled. Played with the audience. And the more he danced, the louder the shouts became.

“You are my fuel”

After the first explosion came the declaration of intent. Ricky looked at the audience and spoke of a bond that, that night, he wanted to take beyond music.

Peru and Puerto Rico, once again united by music. The union of two peoples, how beautiful. Long live the union between two peoples! Peru, I love you very much. Thank you, I say it from the heart. My soul is yours, Lima,” he said.

The audience responded again with an ovation. And he still made another promise: “I promise I will give everything on stage. Lima, you are my fuel.”

No need for much rhetoric. What he promised with words he began to show with his body.

The concert progressed with choreographies, costume changes, atmosphere shifts, and a repertoire built over more than three decades of songs. Ricky moved from pop to Latin rhythms, from sensuality to party, and when it seemed the show couldn’t slow down, he did just that.

Tal vez” arrived. And Costa 21 changed mood. Because there are songs you dance to and others you keep in some uncomfortable place in memory. Ricky left the dancer aside for a moment to become a performer. The crowd accompanied every phrase and what minutes before was a party became a huge sentimental chorus.

That was one of the night’s successes: Ricky Martin didn’t need to choose between nostalgia and present because he built the concert with both.

The Ricky we wanted to see

But the truce lasted little. Ricky had promised to give everything and seemed determined to fulfill it to the last consequence.

The dancing returned. The hips returned. That artist who understood decades ago that a concert of his cannot be watched sitting down returned.

Songs like “La Mordidita” brought the party and flirting back to the stage. With “Livin’ la Vida Loca”, the audience inevitably returned to that Ricky who conquered the Anglo market without ceasing to sound Latin.

Because there is a difference between remembering a song and living it again. And Costa 21 was living it. Ricky was sweating. Dancing. Running from one side to the other. Smiling as if he was also enjoying that complicity.

Until one of those scenes happened that no audience cell phone wanted to miss. In the middle of the show, he took off his shirt. The screams were immediate. But something else was missing. Ricky took the garment, wiped the sweat with it, and threw it to the audience.

Then there was no song that could compete with the roar. Dozens of arms rose trying to catch that unexpected “trophy” while he watched the scene from the stage.

Yes, we can talk about staging, lights, musicians, and choreographies. But we can also admit it: Ricky Martin knows perfectly well what he provokes. And he plays with it.

Songs that hold lives

The night also had room to pause. Because Ricky Martin’s career is not explained only by dance. “Tu recuerdo” and those songs where the voice prevails over movement reminded us that behind the pop phenomenon there is also a singer who has accompanied personal stories for several generations.

In those moments, the party turned into memory. A song could take you twenty years back without asking permission. To a trip. To a breakup. To someone. To a younger version of yourself.

Maybe that’s why looking around during a Ricky Martin concert is so revealing. There are fans who have followed him for decades and others who discovered his songs much later. People of different ages singing exactly the same chorus.

It wasn’t just nostalgia. Because nostalgia looks back. That was happening in the present.

Crazy life

And then the final burst returned. By then, the rain, the cold, or the wet hair were minor details. The night had won long ago. And there was still that song that for years accompanied sports victories, celebrations, and entire stadiums: “La copa de la vida”.

The perfect closing for a concert built as a celebration. Arms up. Jumps. Shouts. Ricky leading from the stage and a crowd gladly obeying. Because by then his promise from the first songs was already fulfilled. He had given everything.

“Lima, thank you, see you soon”, he said before leaving. Then he took a cell phone and recorded from the stage that audience that minutes before had turned Costa 21 into a party.

Ricky Martin said goodbye and the lights ended up turning on. But some people kept singing. Others reviewed the videos they had just recorded. And many still smiled. Maybe that was what it was about. Dancing again. Remembering. Feeling. Discovering that some songs grow with us but never age. And proving that, when Ricky Martin sings, life can still get a little crazier.
