The Lima Chamber of Commerce (CCL) urged the next Government to implement five priority reforms that, according to them, would restore confidence and economic dynamism to Peru. The president of the business association, Raúl Fernández-Concha, stated that state inefficiency and corruption have prevented taking advantage of the favorable international context of high mineral prices. “The country barely grows at 3%, when it should be doing double that”, he noted.

In the view of the association’s president, Peru is not taking advantage of the high level of mineral prices mainly due to state inefficiency and corruption, emphasizing the importance of taking measures to correct the country’s course to achieve better results.
He assured that they expect to meet soon with the president-elect, Keiko Fujimori, to whom they will present the proposed measures the Government should implement.
In this regard, the Institutional Director of the CCL, Carlos Posada, highlighted the five main topics on the agenda:
1. Close the infrastructure gap in transportation, energy, water, and digital connectivity.
2. Simplify and unblock projects by reducing procedures and deadlines, as well as eliminating overregulation.

3. Generate trust and predictability, guaranteeing citizen security, economic stability, fiscal discipline, and respect for contracts.
4. Promote productivity and formalization by offering better education, technical training, quality health, and technological adoption.
5. Honor the State’s obligations with suppliers and contractors.
Regarding this, the president of the CCL summarized that, fundamentally, it is all about reducing State intervention and making it more efficient. In this sense, he criticized that the last supplementary credit approved by the current Government will only be used for current expenses, while prevention works against the El Niño Phenomenon continue to be postponed.
“It has not been due to lack of money, but because the ministers have not granted the financing to complete them. This is an issue we cannot overlook, and we have asked the Ombudsman’s Office to investigate all responsible ministers since 2017”, he stated.
Another point he emphasized was the need to guarantee legal security. “Contracts must be fulfilled. Businesspeople do not ask for privileges, we ask for clear rules and that they be respected,” he affirmed.
