WHICH COUNTRIES WILL HOST THE NEXT WORLD CUP?
After the 2026 World Cup concluded, FIFA confirmed that the 2030 World Cup will be held in a historic and special way to mark the tournament’s centenary. That is, on that occasion, Uruguay, Argentina, and Paraguay will host the opening matches, while the rest of the matches will be played in Spain, Morocco, and Portugal. Although this important competition began with the participation of 13 national teams and had Montevideo as its sole venue, CNN reported that Conmebol president Alejandro Domínguez promoted a proposal to expand that edition to 64 teams, a measure that would completely modify the tournament format and which he formally presented in April during the 80th Ordinary Conmebol Congress.
That’s not all, as this decision is due to Uruguay being chosen for being the first host (1930) and the first World Cup champion; while Argentina, for having played the first final; and Paraguay, for hosting the main Conmebol headquarters. Although it has not yet been confirmed that these three South American countries will qualify directly for being the hosts, it is expected that the opening match will be played at the Estadio Centenario and that these national teams will play their respective group stage matches at home, accompanied by the support of their fans. On the other hand, FIFA confirmed that Saudi Arabia will be the sole host country for the 2034 World Cup; although it is still to be defined whether the tournament will be played at the end of the year to avoid the high temperatures characteristic of the region.
