Flor Salvador, author of “Boulevard”, talks about her latest book and the possibility of a sequel to the movie

A few years ago, Flor Salvador’s days were spent between anatomy notes and assignments for her Medicine degree. But she imagined another life. One where emotions resonate louder than diagnoses, where the weight of loss and depression runs through every story. This is how “Boulevard” was born. She signed this, her first book, with the pseudonym Ekilorhe on the Wattpad platform when she was 15 years old. More than a decade later, that novel published online became one of the most read youth publishing phenomena in Spanish. Then came the film adaptation on Prime Video and, with it, the trips that today bring her to the country to reconnect with her readers at the Lima International Book Fair (FIL).

“Peru is among the top places in the world where I have the highest concentration of readers,” says the Mexican author. At 27 years old, the saga she wrote has accumulated more than 151 million readings online.

She rests her arm on the desk of an office, in her hotel in Lima, where El Comercio meets her for an interview. It seems as if she is used to having long and extensive conversations. But it must be her familiarity with the city. She had visited Lima for the presentation of her first work in 2021 and now returns with the third to FIL 2026.

On her list, the first book of the saga is titled “Boulevard,” the second “After Him,” and the latest “Before Her,” but she is also preparing “Eternal,” the conclusion of a story that took her traveling through Latin America and Europe.

What is “Boulevard” about?

“Boulevard” tells the romance of Hasley and Luke, two teenagers from Sydney, Australia. Salvador, originally from Ciudad del Carmen (Mexico), has never visited that country but insists that the center of the story was never the territory — one she got to know with the help of Google — but the love of the characters and their chaos. In “Before Her,” she decided to go back in time to explain the origin of the protagonist Luke’s wounds, a young man who lost his brother, fell into addictions after the trauma, and suffers from his father’s coldness. “I wanted people to understand why he became who we read about in ‘Boulevard,’” she says.

Salvador acknowledges that addressing depression and drug use in a novel aimed at teenagers involved a responsibility. “Drugs are a very strong topic. In fact, I liked how it was represented in the movie,” she comments about the adaptation starring Spanish actors Eve Ryan and Mikel Niso, who play Hasley and Luke.

“I wanted to write the third book of the saga so that it is known that Luke’s situation is bad and the small signs in the character’s life are noticed, as he is practically left alone at a difficult moment. That’s when he locks himself in his problems and turns to what he feels anesthetizes his pain,” she explains. On Wattpad, some chapters of the saga also include reading restrictions for those over 14 or 16 years old, as appropriate.

There is a dedication in “Boulevard: Before Her” where the author speaks to her younger sister: “For Daniela, because the same love that Luke has for Zach is the one I have for her.” The reference points to her eight-year-old sister with whom she strengthened the bond after their father’s passing. The girl inspires the only person in whom Luke, the protagonist of the novel, trusts with his hand on his heart, his older brother Zach. “I try to be present in Daniela’s growth,” she concludes.
