Arequipa Avenue is preparing for a change in its traffic dynamics with the implementation of a new plan promoted by the Urban Transport Authority for Lima and Callao (ATU). The initiative, called Arequipa Bidirectional Bus Lane, aims to speed up the movement of the Blue Corridor units and give priority to public transport. With this measure, the authorities seek to improve the service used daily by more than 70 thousand passengers. The proposal marks the beginning of a strategy aimed at optimizing mobility on one of the busiest axes of the capital.

The first phase of the project will cover a 1.5-kilometer stretch between 9 de Diciembre Avenue (Paseo Colón) and Emilio Fernández street. During this period, the ATU will carry out constant monitoring of traffic behavior and the performance of the new circulation scheme. The results obtained will serve to determine the feasibility of extending the bidirectional lane to other sectors of Arequipa Avenue. The evaluation will allow measuring the impact of the measure before adopting a definitive implementation.
This is the day ATU has chosen for the pilot plan of the Bidirectional Lane that will transport more than 70 thousand passengers
ATU will start this Thursday, August 6, the execution of the pilot plan of the Arequipa Bidirectional Bus Lane, a measure aimed at optimizing the operation of the Blue Corridor. The initiative seeks to restore order on one of the main roads of the capital and improve the circulation of public transport units. According to the entity, one of the biggest problems is the presence of informal vehicles that travel without authorization on Arequipa Avenue. This situation hinders the entry and exit of buses from stops, delays routes, and compromises passenger safety.
With the implementation of the new circulation scheme, ATU expects to reduce peak hour travel time from 10 to 6 minutes and increase the average speed of buses from 9 to 18 kilometers per hour. The entity specified that the intervention does not include infrastructure works, but a reorganization of the existing road space to optimize its use. Likewise, it assured that the measure will not affect green areas, trees, or the bike lane on Arequipa Avenue. With this pilot plan, the authorities will evaluate whether the model can be consolidated as a solution to improve urban mobility.
What is the main objective of the Arequipa Bidirectional Bus Lane whose passengers are eagerly awaiting?
The implementation of the Arequipa Bidirectional Bus Lane has as its main purpose to optimize the circulation of public transport and improve the efficiency of the service provided by the Blue Corridor. The initiative has technical support among ATU, the Metropolitan Municipality of Lima, and the National Police of Peru. This inter-institutional coordination seeks to guarantee proper project execution and orderly traffic management. With this, it is expected to offer a more efficient mobility alternative for thousands of users.

The pilot phase will allow the authorities to analyze the performance of the new circulation scheme before moving forward with the next implementation stages. During this period, the operational behavior of the bidirectional lane will be evaluated and necessary adjustments identified to optimize its functioning. The results will serve as a basis to define the continuity of the project and its possible expansion. In this way, ATU seeks to ensure that the measure effectively responds to the needs of urban transport in the capital.
Attention all drivers! The police will guide on circulation changes for cars
During the launch of the pilot plan, a special operation will be deployed with the participation of officers from the National Police of Peru (PNP), entity inspectors, and traffic guides. The objective will be to supervise vehicle circulation and ensure compliance with the new road configuration. This work will seek to facilitate the adaptation of drivers and users to the new scheme implemented on Arequipa Avenue. The presence of personnel in the area will be permanent during the first days of operation.
Likewise, the Traffic Police will provide guidance to drivers on circulation modifications and ensure respect for the exclusive bidirectional lane for Blue Corridor units. Officers will prevent private vehicles from entering this reserved space and will direct traffic to established routes. At authorized points, cars must divert their route to Petit Thouars Avenue, since the intervened section of Arequipa Avenue will be designated exclusively for the passage of corridor buses.
