Zelensky reiterates that Ukraine was not involved in the attack on gas pipelines between Europe and Russia

Ukrainian President, Volodymyr Zelensky, reiterated on Sunday that his country was not involved in the 2022 attack against the Nord Stream gas pipelines, which carried Russian gas to Europe.

The German prosecutor’s office stated last month that Ukrainian authorities ordered the sabotage, an accusation that could complicate relations between Kyiv and one of its main military allies.

Zelensky has always denied his country’s involvement.

“Ukraine has never officially participated in any operation related to the Nord Stream explosion,” he told reporters on Sunday when asked about the investigation.

Zelensky added that Germany was “fully aware that Ukraine was not behind either the execution or the very conception of this operation.”

The leader also said that Ukraine is cooperating with the investigation in Germany, and hopes this will not cause a rupture in relations.

“For us, it is very important not to lose our alliance, not to lose the trust of the European countries that have been helping Ukraine since the beginning of this war,” Zelensky said.

On September 26, 2022, seven months after the Russian invasion of Ukraine, four huge gas leaks occurred, preceded by underwater explosions, within a few hours, in the Nord Stream 1 and 2 pipelines.

A Ukrainian citizen was arrested on Wednesday in Croatia, suspected of being involved in the sabotage.

The German prosecutor’s office alleges that this individual collaborated with another Ukrainian citizen arrested in Italy last year before being extradited to Germany.
