Russia denounces “aggressive plans” of the United States in space following Washington’s revelations

Russia denounced this Tuesday some “aggressive plans” by the United States in space, after Washington acknowledged for the first time that the U.S. Space Force has deployed “space control” weapons in orbit.

“The statements by U.S. Air Force Secretary Troy Meink demonstrate that U.S. space security initiatives only seek to distract the international community from the U.S.’s own aggressive ambitions in space,” said the spokesperson for the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Maria Zakharova, cited by local agencies.

According to Zakharova, Moscow has taken note of the statements from the U.S. side.

“These statements constitute clear evidence of the implementation of the U.S. policy to deploy weapons in space and use them in combat operations to ensure its dominance and superiority,” she said.

The United States acknowledged this Monday for the first time that the U.S. Space Force has deployed “space control” weapons in orbit, a capability that, according to Meink, is intended to defend U.S. forces against hostile actions by adversaries.

“We are increasing readiness against existing threats, and the United States has space control weapons in orbit capable of defending the Joint Force against hostile actions by adversaries,” he stated.

The Air Force Department confirmed in a statement that this is the first time Meink publicly acknowledges that the Space Force has deployed weapons in space.

The institution did not specify which systems are in orbit, how many there are, or when they were deployed.

The Kremlin advocated hours earlier for the continuation of international efforts for the demilitarization of space.

“Of course, we expect broad international consolidation to continue the work and advance the position in favor of the complete demilitarization of space,” said the spokesperson for the Russian Presidency, Dmitry Peskov.
