The Somos Perú candidate for the mayoralty of Lima, Carlos Bruce, considered that the participation of the candidates in the debate organized by the National Jury of Elections (JNE) should be mandatory, because citizens have the right to know and compare the proposals of those seeking to occupy the municipal seat.
“I believe it is an obligation to participate in the JNE debate,” Bruce said during an interview on “Tenemos que Hablar,” a video podcast by El Comercio.
“I would make it mandatory, grounds for nullity if one does not participate, because people have the right to see their future mayor exchanging ideas with their competitors and, in that way, compare and be able to make a better decision,” he said.
Bruce also questioned the situation generated around Renovación Popular, for which a group of candidates asked the JNE to evaluate not delivering the credential to Rafael López Aliaga, in case he won the municipal elections.
“There has been pressure on the jury for a situation that is really absurd. Those people who mark the R for Renovación do not know if one candidate or the other will come out, I have never seen anything like this,” he said.
The candidate said that the JNE had not yet made a definitive decision on this point and expressed his expectation that the electoral body will soon make a statement.

“The JNE has not yet made a decision, let’s hope it does soon,” he said.
“He is afraid”
During the interview, Bruce also said he has insisted on the possibility of debating with Rafael López Aliaga.
“I have insisted quite a bit, apparently he (Rafael López Aliaga) is afraid to debate with me, nothing more,” he said.
Bruce indicated, however, that the situation of López Aliaga as a candidate must first be defined before determining if both can face each other in an electoral debate.
“Let’s first see if the JNE says if he is a candidate or not, and if he is, hopefully we have the opportunity to debate,” he said.
