The former military chief of the Bosnian Serbs and war criminal Ratko Mladic died in a prison hospital in The Hague, reported the Serbian state broadcaster RTS, after suffering several strokes.
Mladic, 84, was nicknamed the “Butcher of Bosnia” for his role in the 1995 Srebrenica massacre during the Bosnian war.
Mladic had been seriously ill for months, and in April suffered a stroke, according to his family. He died days after the UN justice system rejected the request from his family and the Serbian government to transfer him to a military hospital in Belgrade.
This former general led the Bosnian Serb forces during the 1992-1995 war.
He was sentenced in 2017 to life imprisonment by the International Criminal Tribunal (ICTY) for the former Yugoslavia, for genocide, war crimes, and crimes against humanity during the Bosnian war, which left nearly 100,000 dead. The verdict was upheld on appeal in 2021.

Among those crimes stands out the massacre of about 8,000 Bosnian Muslim men and boys, committed by Bosnian Serb forces in July 1995 in Srebrenica.
Mladic managed to escape but was finally arrested in Serbia in 2011 after 16 years on the run. Some Serbian leaders still admire him.
During the Balkan war, he was the military face of the trio composed along with then Yugoslav president Slobodan Milosevic, and the political leader of the Bosnian Serbs Radovan Karadzic.
