The new king of Norway following the death this Friday of Harald V has chosen the name Haakon VIII for his reign and has decided to keep the same motto as his father: “Everything for Norway”, reported the Royal House on its official Facebook account.
In this first message after the death of Harald V at 89 years old, the Royal House wrote only two sentences: “His Majesty King Haakon VIII” and “Everything for Norway,” accompanied by the official portrait of the new head of state.
The Royal House of Norway announced the decision of the new king after the extraordinary meeting held between the monarch and the government cabinet led by Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre, at the headquarters of the Norwegian monarchy.
In that meeting, the new head of state received at the Royal Palace the support and condolences of the members of the Executive, who offered words of mourning to the royal family for the death of Harald V.
“Our deepest condolences on the passing of His Majesty Harald V. We are a mourning people. We are a grateful nation. Thank you for a lifetime of service. The king has passed away. Long live the king,” wrote Gahr Støre in the condolence book opened at the Royal Palace, according to the NTB agency.
After the meeting, from 10:00 GMT to 11:00 GMT, church bells across the country rang, while the Armed Forces fired 21-gun salutes from locations such as the cannons of Akershus Fortress in Oslo and the Haakonsvern Naval Base in the coastal city of Bergen, in the west of the Nordic country.
