Ingemmet deploys 14 brigades to identify more than 2,100 critical points due to possible rains from El Niño

• The specialized brigades travel through coastal and southern Andean areas to identify places exposed to landslides, mudslides, and floods.

• The Geological, Mining and Metallurgical Institute (Ingemmet) deployed 14 specialized brigades along the Peruvian coast and southern Andean areas to identify critical areas facing possible intense rains, mudslides, and floods associated with the El Niño Phenomenon.

• The information obtained will allow the corresponding entities to adopt preventive measures against the possible effects of these events and reduce risks for the population, reported engineer Magdie Ochoa Zubiate, Ingemmet specialist , in statements to Andina.

• The specialist explained that the work is carried out within the framework of the supreme decree that declared an emergency due to imminent danger from rains in more than 18 departments because of the El Niño Phenomenon.
• The deployment of brigades is concentrated in 14 departments in the coastal and southern Andean zone.

• More than 2,100 critical points identified

• Ingemmet has identified more than 2,100 critical points exposed to hazards such as landslides, mudslides, and floods. Most of these places are located in the departments of Tumbes, Piura, Áncash, and Lima.

• Meanwhile, for the period September-November 2026 , air temperatures well above normal are expected along the entire coast , with a high probability of new record values being registered.

• Forecasts for summer 2027
• Senamhi estimated that in the summer season 2027, between January and March , the climate forecast predicts above-normal rains on the northern coast, central coast, and northwestern highlands. Meanwhile, in the southeastern and southwestern highlands, precipitation is expected to be between normal and below normal.

• According to Senamhi , from Tuesday, September 1 to Thursday, September 3, an increase in temperature is expected on the coast and highlands. It warned that this could lead to an increase in ultraviolet radiation levels.

• The Disaster Risk Management Commission of the Ministry of Culture began its work with technical inspections in the regions of Tumbes and Piura to assess the conditions of archaeological sites, identify risks, and gather information to guide actions to protect cultural heritage against the possible effects of the El Niño Phenomenon 2026-2027.

• In an interview with Andina’s Online Channel, the executive president of Pronied, Pedro Morales Gonzales , said that “in these few months remaining before the rains arrive, we are planning to carry out preventive maintenance on all the roofs of schools that could be affected.” 

• Minedu plans maintenance of school roofs at risk due to rains from El Niño
• The National Educational Infrastructure Program (Pronied) of the Ministry of Education (Minedu) will carry out maintenance of the roofs of educational institutions that are at risk due to the expected intensification of the rainy period caused by the El Niño phenomenon.
