Presidents of Peru and Uruguay agree to promote an agenda focused on combating crime

Peru’s president-elect, Keiko Fujimori, and Uruguay’s president, Yamandú Orsi, agreed to promote an agenda focused on the fight against organized crime, in a meeting held in Lima before the right-wing president’s inauguration.

In the meeting held at the Palacio de Torre Tagle, the headquarters of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Peru, in Lima, Fujimori and Orsi highlighted the bicentennial of diplomatic relations and the traditional ties of neighborhood and brotherhood, according to the Peruvian Foreign Ministry’s social media.

“The meeting highlighted the willingness of both Governments to promote a substantive agenda focused on the fight against transnational organized crime, technological innovation, technical cooperation, and the strengthening of trade and investments,” it added.

Orsi arrived in Lima this Monday to participate in Fujimori’s inauguration ceremony, along with other regional leaders invited by the daughter and political heir of former president Alberto Fujimori (1990-2000).

Other regional leaders attending the president-elect’s inauguration include Argentina’s president, Javier Milei; Bolivia’s, Rodrigo Paz; Chile’s, José Antonio Kast; Panama’s, José Raúl Mulino; and Ecuador’s, Daniel Noboa, as well as Spain’s king, Felipe VI.

Keiko Fujimori, who won the presidential election on her fourth attempt, was proclaimed on July 3 as the winner of the second round of Peru’s presidential elections, with a narrow margin of less than 50,000 votes over leftist candidate Roberto Sánchez.
