In a session of the Arequipa Regional Agrarian Management Committee (CGRA), Zonal Directorate 6 of the National Service of Meteorology and Hydrology of Peru (Senamhi) released updated information on the El Niño phenomenon and the latest Isolated Depressions at High Levels (DANA) “Aníbal” and “Bertha”.

At the meeting, specialist José Luis Ticona Jara detailed the characteristics of these phenomena and their influence on the atmospheric behavior of the area. The DANAs “Aníbal” and “Bertha” were associated with changes in climatic conditions, including an increase in cloudiness, presence of drizzles and rains, as well as variations in temperatures in different sectors of Arequipa.
During the session, the importance of Senamhi’s forecasts, warnings, and information products was also emphasized, to anticipate scenarios that could affect agricultural activities, water resources, and other productive sectors. The representatives of the agricultural sector also learned about the latest meteorological scenarios, as well as the usefulness of incorporating scientific information into planning.
Finally, Senamhi stated that it will continue to consolidate articulated work with institutions related to the agricultural sector through Zonal Directorate 6. The goal is to make it easier to access reliable data on climate, hydrology, and meteorology that help better plan for climate changes.
According to ENFEN’s latest official statement, published on August 14, the Coastal El Niño would continue to develop over the coming months. For the Niño 1+2 region, located off the coasts of northern and central Peru, the phenomenon is expected to reach a probable magnitude between strong and extraordinary until summer.
Current projections represent a significant change from estimates made during the first months of the year. Specialists warn that the behavior of the Pacific Ocean and the atmosphere will continue to be constantly monitored, as the evolution of these factors can modify the predicted intensity of the event.
In addition to warming off the Peruvian coast, El Niño conditions also persist in the central equatorial Pacific. For this area, ENFEN predicts that the event will extend until early autumn 2027, with an intensity that could increase over the coming months.

Between August and September 2026, projections point to strong conditions in the central Pacific. Subsequently, between October 2026 and February 2027, the phenomenon could remain between strong and very strong, which keeps the institutions responsible for climate monitoring on alert.
During the quarter between August and October, air temperatures are expected to remain well above normal values along the entire Peruvian coast. The warming of the sea and the atmosphere could generate unusual conditions even during the current winter season.

The possible impact would not be the same in all regions of Peru. The northern and central coastal areas are usually especially sensitive to variations caused by the Coastal El Niño, due to the risk of river overflows, floods, huaicos (landslides), and damage to homes, roads, and other infrastructure.
Given this scenario, authorities continue to reinforce prevention and preparation actions against the possible effects of the El Niño Phenomenon 2026-2027. ENFEN’s monitoring will be key during the coming months to determine if the predicted warming consolidates and what the final impact of this event could be in the different regions of the country.
