U.S. Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, arrives in Peru this Wednesday afternoon as part of his tour of the region that began this Tuesday in Colombia and also includes Ecuador.

This Thursday, he will meet with President Keiko Fujimori at the Government Palace. The meeting – according to information from the Executive headquarters – “will allow deepening the strategic alliance between both countries and strengthening cooperation ties on priority issues for our country.”
He also detailed that during the meeting, both authorities will address topics of common interest, with special emphasis on strengthening cooperation related to the El Niño phenomenon, security, the fight against transnational organized crime, defense, promotion of investments and bilateral trade, among others.
Before heading to the Government Palace, Rubio will go to Torre Tagle, the headquarters of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, where he will be received with honors by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Carlos Espá.
In an opinion column published in El Comercio, Rubio highlighted that they have “great expectations to work with the new Fujimori government to project our 200 years of shared history into the future.”
He described Peru as “an important extra-NATO ally” and announced that they are “welcoming” our country into the Shield of the Americas (Shield of the Americas).

This is an initiative by President Donald Trump that brings together various countries in the region with the goal of combating criminal organizations.
“We are synchronizing efforts to protect our hemisphere from transnational and regional threats, welcoming Peru – which is now an important extra-NATO ally – into the Shield of the Americas,” Rubio said in his column in El Comercio.
According to the EFE agency, in Miami – before boarding the plane to Colombia – the representative of the Trump administration spoke about Peru. “After a period of political instability, they have also recently held elections, and we look forward to working closely with President (Keiko) Fujimori.”
On September 4, in a statement from the State Department, it was highlighted that his trip to Colombia, Ecuador, and Peru seeks to strengthen key U.S. partnerships in the region.
Additionally, it was detailed that he will discuss “U.S. support for Colombia’s response to the earthquake; strengthening cooperation in the joint fight against narcoterrorism that threatens our hemisphere; and the benefits of closer trade relations between our countries.”
