🟢 The visual record of the Cusco School
The Andean Photographic Archive, an institution of the Bartolomé de las Casas Center, has a great task ahead: the restoration, preservation, and digitization of thousands of negatives from photographers of the Cusco School, as those who worked in the city and surroundings in the first half of the 20th century are known, such as César Meza Salazar. This will be done after receiving the Ambassador’s Fund for the Preservation of Cultural Heritage from the United States Embassy, amounting to US$170,000 for this one-year project.
🔴 The risk of Callao running out of water
Something extremely worrying is happening in Callao. Due to a problem caused by El Niño in 2014, the region’s surface water supply now depends on the Central Line, a branch that starts at La Atarjea and supplies districts of Lima such as Jesús María and San Miguel. According to Sedapal’s transfer report, the use of this branch was supposed to be temporary. However, it has become permanent since the damaged pipeline has not yet been rehabilitated. Its collapse would affect hundreds of thousands of Callao residents.
🔴 The Laras and illegal mining
The attack that occurred in Trujillo a few days ago, involving Los Pulpos, has put the spotlight on Jenss Lara Tantaquilla, but also on members of his family, who since 2012 have faced serious accusations of illegal mining, as revealed by an El Comercio report. For example, in 2017 an environmental prosecutor’s office seized 100 tons of ore (gold content) from a company owned by Eleuterio Lara López, Jenss’s father, under suspicion that it had an illicit origin.
