WHAT PROBLEMS CAN PROLONGED SCREEN USE CAUSE TO VISION?

Digital eye strain, also called computer vision syndrome, includes discomfort derived from long-term use of electronic devices, such as blurred vision, dry eyes, headache, and muscle discomfort. These symptoms can affect the ocular surface, visual focus, and the musculoskeletal system. Likewise, another cause that can lead to this condition is the reduction of blinking during prolonged screen use. According to the American Academy of Ophthalmology, when looking at electronic devices, the frequency can decrease from about 15 times per minute to between 5 and 7, favoring dry eyes and symptoms such as burning, irritation, and tearing.

In response, measures to prevent digital eye strain are aimed at reducing eye effort and maintaining proper posture in front of screens. That is, the AOS advises applying the 20-20-20 rule and placing the device at an approximate distance of 50 to 65 centimeters from the face, slightly below eye level, in order to reduce eye and muscle strain. That’s not all, they also recommend blinking regularly, taking visual breaks, and using artificial tears to relieve eye dryness caused by prolonged screen exposure, as shared by Infobae.

¿WHAT HABITS ARE RELATED TO SKIN HEALTH?

A review by the United States National Institutes of Health (NIH) examined the relationship between the skin and the gastrointestinal system, known as the “gut-skin axis” (GSA). The study noted that the microbiota of both organs contributes to their defense mechanisms, but its imbalance can promote inflammation and be associated with conditions such as, for example, atopic dermatitis, psoriasis, and inflammatory bowel diseases.

Likewise, in an interview with Infobae, specialist Fernando Felice pointed out that the GSA establishes a connection between the microbiota, the immune system, and the skin. That is, alterations in intestinal balance can promote inflammatory processes and affect the condition of the skin. That’s not all, the UBA professor warned that alterations in the intestinal microbiota could worsen conditions such as acne, rosacea, dermatitis, and psoriasis. Additionally, this imbalance could favor premature skin aging by affecting collagen and elastin.
